Just five minutes. That is what Tom told himself as he opened TikTok after dinner, hoping to relax briefly before starting his homework. What followed, however, was a classic case of algorithmic engagement. The first video featured a humorous cat, followed by a stunning football goal, a cooking tutorial, a magic trick, and a climber scaling a mountain. Because the content was so varied and unpredictable, Tom remained hooked. When he finally looked at the clock, he realized that over an hour had vanished.

Many people share this experience. Platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts are meticulously designed to sustain user attention. With every swipe, you are presented with something potentially funny, exciting, or surprising. Because the content is constantly changing, you feel a compulsive need to keep scrolling, hoping that the next video will be the most entertaining one yet.

Scientists explain that this happens due to dopamine, a chemical in the brain linked to motivation and pleasure. When we encounter something new or stimulating, the brain releases a burst of dopamine, which reinforces the desire to keep watching. Over time, the brain becomes accustomed to this constant stream of rapid-fire rewards, making it difficult to focus on anything less stimulating.

After a few months, Tom noticed the consequences of his habit. Reading a book felt tedious, and he struggled to focus on his studies for more than fifteen minutes at a time. Even watching a full-length movie felt agonizingly slow. He found himself reaching for his phone at every available opportunity.

Seeking a change, Tom decided to undergo a one-month digital detox by deleting the app. The first week was challenging; he frequently reached for his phone out of habit, sometimes forgetting he had even removed the app. However, by the second week, he noticed a significant difference. His attention span improved, he completed his schoolwork more efficiently, and he found he could enjoy genuine conversations with friends without the constant distraction of his screen.

Short-form videos are not inherently bad; they can be educational, amusing, and a great way to unwind. The issue arises when they consume excessive amounts of our time and focus. Smartphones are incredibly useful tools, but we must be intentional. It is vital that we decide how to manage our technology, rather than letting our technology manage us!
