The air was freezing and misty. As the train began to move again, the wind whistled past Maya’s ears. "Look!" she shouted, pointing at the next carriage. A man was swinging from the roof, moving toward them with a menacing look.
"Jump!" Jack yelled.
They leaped across the gap between the cars just as the train entered a long, dark tunnel. Maya felt the cold stone walls of the tunnel passing inches from her head. When they emerged on the other side, the man was gone. He had vanished into the fog.
"Who was that?" Maya gasped, her lungs burning from the cold air.
"A mercenary," Jack replied, looking worried. "Thorne is tired of waiting. He’s sending professionals now."
